Telugu Classical Songs

As in most parts of India, traditional or classical Telugu songs are of a devotional nature, called Bhakti in India. This is because the basis of most Indian music lies in the ancient chants and songs of the Temples in Vedic India nearly 2000 years ago. This system is called the Raga Sangeet system or simply Raga music.

In the Southern states of India, a form of music known as Carnatic music is most popular. Many famous songwriters of these times wrote their songs in Telugu and as such, Telugu clasical music and Telugu music itself has deep roots in Carnatic music. The Veena, the ghatam, the mridangam, etc. are just some of the instruments used during these times and even today in Telugu classical music. It is these very instruments that give the music its unique sound. Due to its roots in the Temples of India and its devotional character, many songs are dedicated to the gods like Lord Ganesha, Yashoda, Lord Krishna, Lord Tirupati, Lord Rama, Lord Hanuman and similar deities.
